What manufacturers say about ceiling height

Most brands don't give one minimum for every golfer. They give a range and tell you to test your swing.

  • Rapsodo says most indoor simulators need "a clearance space of 9 feet tall minimum." It suggests a 9 ft ceiling may suit golfers about 5'8" and under, and that taller golfers may need 10 or even 11 ft. It also suggests the ceiling be 6 to 9 inches taller than the highest point of your swing.
  • SkyTrak says 10 ft "typically offers ample clearance for most golfers," and that many golfers say 9 ft is enough.
  • Uneekor recommends a room around 10 ft high for its overhead launch monitors.

Rapsodo also makes a point that's easy to miss. Plan for the tallest person who will use the simulator, not just you.

Ceiling heights stated by manufacturers

These are the published numbers we could confirm. "Ceiling" means the room height. "Mount height" means where an overhead unit hangs.

Floor-based launch monitors (the kind that sit beside or behind the ball) don't hang from the ceiling. For those, your swing and the enclosure height are what count.

Overhead launch monitors need their own height

If you want a ceiling-mounted unit, check its range before anything else. Too low can be a problem. Foresight notes that going below its 9.5 ft minimum for the GCHawk may affect performance.

Too high can be a problem too. ProTee publishes a separate guide for its VX in rooms with ceilings over 10 ft. Trackman measures its iO height from the turf surface to the ceiling. That means your mat counts as part of the equation.

Your mat and platform raise you up

Every inch of flooring under your feet takes an inch off your swing room. Hitting mats are thicker than most people expect (see our hitting mat guide). Shop Indoor Golf lists these thicknesses for SIGPRO products:

  • SIGPRO Softy: 2 1/2 in (about 6.4 cm)
  • SIGPRO Softy Lite: 1 1/4 in (about 3.2 cm)
  • SIG8, SIG10 and SIG12 simulator flooring: 2.375 in (about 6 cm)

If you add a hitting platform or stack a mat on turf, add those together too. Always measure from the finished hitting surface, not the bare floor.

How to check your own swing

Numbers on a spec sheet are a starting point. Your own swing is the real test. Rapsodo and SkyTrak both suggest testing in the actual room.

  1. Stand where the ball will sit, on the mat height you plan to use (or something the same thickness).
  2. Take slow, controlled swings with your driver. That's usually your longest club.
  3. Have someone mark the highest point the clubhead reaches in the backswing and follow-through. Rapsodo suggests chalk or tape on a wall.
  4. Measure from that mark to the ceiling. If the club touches the ceiling at any point, Rapsodo says the room likely won't work.
  5. Repeat for every golfer who will use the space.

Also look up, not just at the flat ceiling. Check for beams, ducts, light fixtures, sprinklers, and in a garage, the door tracks and opener (our garage planning checklist covers those). Rapsodo notes ceiling fixtures can also limit where your projector goes.

Planning ideas for a low room

If your test swing is tight, these are planning options to consider, not guarantees:

  • Put the tee under the highest spot. Many basements and garages have one taller section between beams or ducts.
  • Pick a thinner mat. Compare thickness specs before you buy.
  • Choose a lower enclosure. Some makers sell shorter frames for 8 ft rooms, like SkyTrak's Studio 8'.
  • Limit clubs. Some people hit irons and wedges indoors and skip the driver. Only you can decide if that's enough.
  • Deal with the garage door. A garage door opener or track in the swing path may need to be moved. Talk to a garage door pro.
  • Pick a floor unit. If you can't meet an overhead monitor's mount range, a floor-based launch monitor avoids that limit.

Ceiling height checklist

  • Measured ceiling height at the exact hitting spot
  • Subtracted mat, turf and platform thickness
  • Swung a driver slowly at that spot, on that height
  • Checked for beams, ducts, lights, sprinklers and garage door parts
  • Had the tallest person who will use it take a test swing
  • Confirmed the enclosure height fits under the ceiling
  • Confirmed any overhead launch monitor's mount range

FAQ

What is the minimum ceiling height for a golf simulator?

There's no single number. Rapsodo says most simulators need at least 9 ft (2.74 m) of clearance. SkyTrak sells a studio for rooms with 8 ft ceilings. Your swing decides the rest.

Can I have a golf simulator with an 8 ft ceiling?

Sometimes. SkyTrak lists 8 ft as the minimum room height for its Studio 8'. Whether you can swing a driver there depends on your height and swing. Test it before you buy.

Is a 9 ft ceiling high enough for a golf simulator?

For many people, yes. SkyTrak says many golfers find 9 ft enough. Rapsodo says 9 ft may suit golfers about 5'8" and under. Taller golfers should test carefully.

How high do overhead launch monitors need to be mounted?

It depends on the model. Uneekor says 9 to 10 ft. Foresight recommends 10 to 10.5 ft for the GCHawk. Trackman iO runs from 8'10" up to 10'6" depending on setup.

Does the hitting mat affect ceiling height?

Yes. A thick mat raises you up. The SIGPRO Softy is 2 1/2 in thick. Measure your clearance from the top of the mat, not the floor.

Next steps

Ceiling height is one piece of the room. See the full golf simulator room dimensions guide for width, depth and screen distance.
